Genome centre approbated new method for microbial sample processing, that receives highest evaluation of quality assurance proficiency testing

Genome centre has approbated new method for microbial DNA isolation from stool samples. This method has received highest possible evaluation in quality assessment scheme (Biospecimen Proficiency Testing) 2018/2019 year cycle, the protocol is used for processing of research specific samples for Genome Database of Latvian population. This testifies the potential for further development of microbial research potential in Latvia.

The Shadow day at LBMC 2019

This year, on 13 February, 13 secondary school students from various schools visited LBMC with aim to get to know the day-to-day life of a molecular biologist. To make the day more complete and introduce the students with the various research areas that are active in the LBMC, they were given the opportunity to visit several LBMC scientific groups and even had a practical task.

Annual Science Award 2018

 

 

On Friday, February 8, the Latvian Academy of Sciences held an award ceremony for the Annual Science Prize 2018 winners. Scientists of the Latvian Biomedical Research and Studies Centre were also honoured at this award ceremony.

Latvian Biomedical Research and Study centre has started the implementation of the Latvian Council of Science funded project

On December, 2018 Latvian Biomedical Research and Study centre has started the implementation of the Latvian Council of Science funded project “Ethically and socially responsible governance of research biobanks in Latvia: analysis of opinions of public, donors and researchers” (lzp-2018/2-0171). The leading partner of the project is Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine of University of Latvia, from the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study centre the implementation is carried out by Genome Database of Latvian population.

Latvian Biomedical Research and Studies Centre lead researcher Dace Pjanova, elected as the corresponding member of LZA

On 29 November in autumn general meeting of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LZA) were held elections for members of LZA. Nine genuine members, 16 correspondent members, four foreign and one honorary member were elected to the new members of the LZA.

Latvian Biomedical Research and Studies Centre lead researcher Dace Pjanova, elected as the corresponding member of LZA.

In LU Academic supply has been presented prof. Dr. habil. biol. E. Grēns book “The Death Empire. Secret Program of Biological Weapons in the USSR and later”

Unfortunately, the problem of mass destruction weapons today is very actual and little studied, and it is not known to the Latvian reader in particular. Once the most outstanding discoveries of molecular genetics in the world and purposeful manipulations of bacteria and viral genes promised a revolutionary coup in the pharmaceutical industry, medicine and agriculture, but also gave inspiration to the development of biological weapons.
